The Boeing-Stearman Model 75 is a biplane used as a military trainer aircraft, an instrument trainer, and also as an aerobatic trainer. Designed in the 1930s by the Stearman Aircraft Company, the original prototype first flew in 1934. During World War II, Stearman became a subsidiary of Boeing Aircraft Company. The Model 75 served as the primary trainer for the United States Army Air Forces, the United States Navy, plus the Royal Canadian Air Force where it was known as the Kaydet. When we think of the Stearman biplane, the red Kaydet biplanes/dusters from the movie, "Always," often pop into our head but Stearman also built the Kaydet in Navy Blue, Army Olive Drab, Bright Yellow and Bright Chrome Yellow.
It featured modern, heretofore untried construction which included metal tubing and bolt-on aircraft fabric. The Model 75 series became proliferate for a time; a few examples exist today, standing alive and well at local airports all over the continental United States and the world over. They played a vital role in the annals of American history, known for turning out more aviators in five years than any other method of training.
This particular Boeing Stearman poster shows multiple PT-17's flying in formation. Colors of yellow, blue, green, plus a vibrant sky make this a great aeronautical fine art print that documents the training of tens of thousands of pilots during WWII.
